Zebra ZD220 printing blank labels: what to check
The ZD220 feeds labels, but they come out completely blank. If this started just after changing the roll, check the supplies and loading first. This guide covers labels with no marks at all; if a printed label alternates with a blank one, start with calibration and format size.
One test separates two paths
Print the configuration report using the FEED button. If it is blank too, check media, ribbon and hardware. If it contains text, the printer can print with those settings: then compare the file, driver and settings of the failing job.

1. Test independently of the computer
With labels loaded, the cover closed and the ready indicator green, hold FEED and release at the first group of one flash. The configuration report prints. Do not wait for the two-flash group: that starts calibration. A short press normally just advances a label, so a blank label from that action does not prove a fault.
The report is blank too
Continue with media, its orientation and ribbon where applicable. The computer’s layout does not yet explain this result.
The report contains text
Try the minimal format and compare settings sent by your application. A correct report does not guarantee the next job will keep those settings.
2. Check the label type and printable side
On a label outside the printer, rub the printable surface firmly and quickly with your fingernail. A dark mark indicates heat-sensitive media. If no mark appears, confirm with your supplier that the roll is direct thermal before using it without ribbon. Load the printable side towards the printhead, facing up as it crosses the platen roller. Changing the driver’s label size cannot make incompatible paper printable.
3. Distinguish the ZD220d from the ZD220t
Check the variant on the printer’s identification label. The ZD220d needs direct thermal labels and does not use ribbon. The ZD220t supports thermal transfer with ribbon and compatible media, or direct thermal with heat-sensitive media and the matching setting. When using ribbon, check its path, take-up and that the inked side faces the label. Having a ribbon installed is not enough.
In ZPL, ^MTD selects direct thermal and ^MTT selects thermal transfer. They must match the variant and supplies. Do not add ^MTT to a ZD220d or switch to ^MTD to hide a ribbon error while using non-thermal paper.
4. If the report prints, try minimal ZPL
Send this format as raw ZPL through a compatible channel, such as the file-sending feature in Zebra Setup Utilities. It is a 50 × 30 mm test at 203 DPI: adapt the dimensions if your label differs. You should see a frame and ZD220 TEST. It does not change the thermal method; it retains the setting you have checked against your supplies.

^XZThe preview checks the layout; physical printing confirms that an image reaches the media. The example sets width, length and origin, so check those dimensions before sending it.
5. Follow the result
If the report and ZPL test print but your job stays blank, compare the dimensions, offsets and content of the original file. Also check whether the driver or application changes the print method with every job. If the report remains blank with compatible, correctly loaded supplies, check cover closure, clean the printhead following the manual and check the power supply. If it persists, get technical assistance before buying a printhead.
Frequently asked questions
Will calibration fix a ZD220 that prints completely blank labels?
Calibration helps detect label boundaries. It does not turn thermal transfer paper into direct thermal media. If every label is empty, start with the report and supplies.
Does my ZD220 need ribbon?
It depends on the variant and method. The ZD220d does not use ribbon; the ZD220t needs it for thermal transfer. Direct thermal printing uses heat-sensitive media.
Should I set darkness to maximum?
Not as the first test. Confirm media, printable side and method first. If an image appears but is faint, adjust speed and darkness gradually with compatible supplies.
What if every second label is blank?
That is a different pattern: check the configured size, sensing type and calibration. Follow the ZD220 calibration guide linked here.
