Zebra GK420d prints a vertical white line: what to check

The label prints, but a narrow blank stripe cuts through text or graphics at the same distance from the edge. If your GK420d repeats this defect, start with the printhead: Zebra’s manual links vertical tracks of missing print to dirt or damaged printhead elements.

Clean first, then compare

Keep a faulty label, clean the printhead with a new cleaning pen using the steps below, and repeat the same job. If the stripe stays in the same position with another compatible roll and another design, have the printhead inspected.

Two labels with black bands: the left has a vertical white line and the right has uninterrupted bands.
Illustration of the defect and expected output, not a real repair test. The arrow indicates media travel; the white stripe follows that direction.

1. Check that the stripe follows media travel

Compare several labels and measure from the same edge. Here, “vertical” means parallel to media travel, even when the design is rotated. Print must be missing where black should appear. Intended white areas, a stripe across the feed direction or an entirely faint label need different checks.

2. Separate a printing defect from a file defect

Check the preview and try another design. You can print the internal configuration report with suitable media loaded, the cover closed and a steady green light: hold FEED and release after the first flash. If the line cuts printed content at the same position on that report, the original file is not the only cause. A report with no print at that position cannot rule it out. The GK420d is direct thermal; there is no ribbon to replace.

3. Clean the dark line on the printhead

Use a new pen specifically intended for thermal printhead cleaning. The printhead is in the upper assembly under the cover; the lower rubber cylinder is the platen roller. They are different parts.

  1. Let pending jobs finish, switch off and unplug the printer. Open the cover and let the printhead cool for at least one minute; do not touch its surface with your fingers.
  2. Move media aside if it blocks access. Locate the dark printing line under the cover without removing the printhead assembly.
  3. Gently wipe the dark area with the cleaning pen, from the center toward each end. Do not use a contaminated pen, tools or abrasives.
  4. Wait one minute for drying before closing. Reload the labels, close the cover securely, reconnect and power on.

Conceptual illustration: the highlighted part is the printhead, not the lower roller. The enlarged detail explains the motion; no removal is required.

4. Repeat a three-label test

Print the same bands before and after cleaning, using the same roll, speed and darkness settings. This example draws three continuous horizontal bands: an aligned white break helps locate an area that is not printing. The preview shows the intended design, not the physical condition of the head.

Example for 50 × 30 mm at 203 DPI: 400 × 240 dots, three copies with ^PQ3. Adapt ^PW, ^LL and the bands to your media before sending; never print beyond the label. The bands cover x=16 to x=384, so a stripe outside that area will not show. The example sets the origin with ^LH0,0; it does not calibrate or change speed or darkness.

The bands are complete

If the stripe disappears when repeating the same test, cleaning has resolved the observed defect. Also check your usual label.

The stripe stays in the same place

Compare with another compatible roll and another design. If it persists, keep samples for inspection; one print alone does not prove the head is broken.

The stripe moves or affects only one design

Check the file, images, loading and media condition. This result is less consistent with a single fixed column of printhead elements.

5. Try another roll before replacing parts

Try compatible direct thermal media known to work. If the line remains at the same physical position across the width, with different designs and after cleaning, damaged printhead elements are a possibility. Keep the samples and arrange technical inspection. The symptom alone does not confirm a hardware fault. Do not scrape the head or turn darkness to maximum to hide the stripe.

Frequently asked questions

Will calibrating the GK420d remove a white stripe?

Calibration adjusts media detection and feeding. It cannot clean the head or repair its elements. Use it if labels also skip or start inconsistently.

Should I replace the ribbon?

No. The GK420d uses direct thermal printing without ribbon. This guide covers the GK420d, not ribbon issues on the GK420t.

Does a white line mean the head is damaged?

Not necessarily. Zebra also identifies dirt as a cause. Clean and compare tests on compatible media before requesting inspection or replacement.

Why does the preview look correct?

The preview represents the ZPL file. It cannot reproduce dirt, wear or printer damage. If only the paper shows the stripe, that comparison helps narrow the diagnosis.
