Zebra ZD421: print the configuration label and find the IP

If you need to install a ZD421 on another computer or find out why it appears offline, start with its configuration report. You can print it from the buttons without relying on the Windows driver. It shows printing settings and, depending on installed options, network information.

AI-generated conceptual illustration. 192.0.2.25 is an example address, not your printer’s IP or a value you should configure.

1. Print the report using the buttons

Let pending jobs finish first. This procedure starts with the printer already powered on and ready; you do not need to disconnect USB or install an application to use it.

  1. Load labels and, for thermal transfer, the appropriate ribbon. Close the cover and wait for solid green STATUS.
  2. Press FEED and CANCEL together, hold for two seconds, then release both.
  3. Collect the reports once printing finishes and STATUS returns to solid green. The network report is included according to installed options.

This is a report of current settings, not calibration or a factory reset. Do not confuse it with PAUSE + CANCEL, the SmartCal combination. If the printer is not ready, check alerts and media loading first.

2. Separate printer settings from network settings

Printer Configuration lists settings such as speed, darkness and media type, along with device details such as model, serial number and firmware. Network Configuration depends on installed communication options, and its contents can vary between versions.

Keep the reports together and record the date. A successful report confirms the printer can produce that document internally; it does not prove Windows, the network cable or the application is communicating with it.

3. Find IP ADDRESS under the correct interface

For an Ethernet cable connection, look under Wired; for Wi-Fi, check Wireless or WLAN. Do not copy the first address you see without checking the section: a report can contain multiple interfaces. A Bluetooth MAC address is not an IP address either.

Network report fields
FieldMeaning
IP ADDRESSAddress of that printer network interface.
SUBNETSubnet mask; not the printer’s address.
GATEWAYGateway for that network; not the print destination.
IP PROTOCOLIP assignment method. Helps distinguish dynamic and permanent configuration.
MAC ADDRESSInterface identifier. Do not enter it as an IP address in a TCP/IP port.

Copy the assigned IP for the connection you use, not GATEWAY or SUBNET. Names and layout may vary with firmware. The address in the illustration is only an example: always use the value from your own report.

4. If the IP is missing or shows 0.0.0.0

A direct USB connection does not need an IP address to print. Check that your variant has Ethernet or Wi-Fi and that you are reading that interface. Having Bluetooth does not mean the printer is connected to Wi-Fi.

If the network interface shows 0.0.0.0, do not use it as a destination. Check the connection and network configuration: cable and port for Ethernet, network and association for Wi-Fi. With DHCP, let the connection complete and print another report. If there is still no usable address, review address assignment with the network administrator.

5. Compare the IP with the computer’s destination

For a print queue using a TCP/IP port, compare its destination address with the report. With DHCP, the IP can change; a queue still pointing to the old address may show the printer as offline even when it is powered on.

Before editing the port, confirm it belongs to this printer. To keep the address stable, arrange a DHCP reservation or static IP with whoever manages the network. Do not invent an address or copy another device’s IP. Keep the reports to compare changes or help with troubleshooting.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a computer to print the configuration?

No. With the printer ready, holding FEED + CANCEL for two seconds prints it from the panel. Media and, where required, ribbon must be loaded correctly.

Is the Windows test page the same report?

No. The Windows test page uses the queue and driver. The report started with the buttons is generated by the printer; they test different parts of the workflow.

Why does my USB ZD421 have no IP?

USB does not require a network address for a direct connection. Ethernet and Wi-Fi depend on the installed hardware and configuration; variants do not all offer the same connections.

Does printing the configuration erase settings?

The described combination prints current settings without resetting them. Do not use the RESET button or other startup sequences to obtain this report.
