Zebra ZD230: how to load ribbon and check its orientation
You replace the ribbon in your ZD230 and get blank labels, wrinkles or a ribbon alert. Before increasing darkness, check three things: supply compatibility, ink orientation and used-ribbon take-up. This guide focuses on replacing ribbon in the thermal transfer variant.

1. Confirm the printer variant and compatible ribbon
Check the printer identification: the thermal transfer ZD230 uses ribbon with compatible media. The direct thermal variant prints on heat-sensitive labels without ribbon. A roll fitting inside is not enough.
Check part number, length, width, core diameter and adapters for your equipment. The ZD230 supports 300 m ribbon options, but length alone does not establish compatibility. Ribbon must cover the media, including its liner; the take-up core must fit and have undamaged notches.
2. Identify the ink-coated side
Zebra specifies ribbon coated on the outside for this family. If it is not identified, press the adhesive corner of a label onto the ribbon’s outside surface, then peel it off. Ink residue on the adhesive helps identify the coated side.
If nothing transfers, repeat on the other side or confirm the part number with the supplier; an inconclusive test does not prove compatibility. Do not infer orientation from gloss alone. Once loaded, the coated side must face the media, not the printhead.
3. Fit the empty core and new roll
Let jobs finish, open the cover and allow the printhead to cool if it has just printed. Remove used ribbon and use a compatible empty core. Refer to the loading drawings in the linked manual to identify your variant’s holders.
- Fit the empty core on the upper take-up spindles: engage the spring-loaded right side first, then the left, aligning the notches until secure.
- Install the new roll on the lower supply spindles using the same mounting method. If adapters are required, use the specified ones and center both cores.
- Route the ribbon end to the take-up core as shown in the manual, without twisting it. Secure it straight with its adhesive strip or a narrow piece of tape.
- Turn the take-up hub with its top moving towards the rear to remove slack and wind up the leader. The ribbon should lie flat and aligned, without forcing it.
Check that media is correctly loaded and close the cover. Zebra’s procedure specifies advancing at least 20 cm (8 in.) of media with FEED to align the ribbon and remove slack. Use brief presses; holding FEED invokes panel functions. Do not pull the ribbon to force the holders to turn.
4. Confirm the print method and test a label
With thermal transfer media and ribbon, select Thermal Transfer in the utility or driver. PRINT METHOD on the configuration report should indicate THERMAL-TRANS. To print the report with the printer ready and its indicator green, hold FEED until the first flash, then release; do not wait for later flash groups.
Then print a label from your usual application. If the report prints correctly but the job does not, compare the settings sent by the application. Calibration detects media; it cannot fix incompatible ribbon or a coated side facing the wrong way.
5. If it still fails after the change
Use the symptom to decide what to check next. Change one thing at a time and keep the part number of the previous working ribbon alongside the new roll’s details.
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Completely blank labels | Coated side, label/ribbon combination, ribbon path and print method. |
| Wrinkles or unprinted bands | Alignment, slack, attachment to the take-up core and slipping cores. |
| Ribbon alert with ribbon loaded | Actual end of roll, installation and sensing; follow the guide for the specific error. |
If loading and supplies are correct but the fault persists, consult the printhead-cleaning procedure or request technical inspection. Do not compensate for incorrectly loaded ribbon by maximizing darkness. Check text and barcode scanning on a sample before a large batch.
Frequently asked questions
Does the ZD230 always need ribbon?
No. It depends on the variant and method. Thermal transfer uses ribbon and compatible media; direct thermal uses heat-sensitive labels without ribbon.
Can I reuse the empty core?
Yes, if it is compatible and in good condition. The core from a finished supply roll can collect the next ribbon, provided it fits correctly.
Will any 300-meter ribbon work?
No. Width, core, adapters, coated side and media compatibility matter as well as length. Confirm the part number for your ZD230.
Will calibration fix ribbon loaded the wrong way round?
No. Check orientation, routing and take-up first. Calibrate after changing label type or size, or for sensing problems, following the manual.
